Ilkay
Gundogan Transferred to Barcelona 2023/2024
Ilkay Gundogan, a midfielder for Manchester City, has
decided to join Barcelona on a free transfer, ending his seven-year stint with
the Premier League champions. The 32-year-old German international has agreed
to a two-year contract extension with the Catalan club.
Gundogan's contract with Manchester City
was set to end on June 30, 2023, and he has been negotiating a new deal with
the club. However, he turned down the one-year contract offered by City and
opted to join Barcelona instead

Gundogan was a key member of Manchester City's
treble-winning squad in 2022/23, scoring two goals in the FA Cup final. Since
joining City from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £20 million in 2016, he has
won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the
Champions League, making 304 appearances and scoring 55 goals in all
competitions.
After his contract with Manchester City terminated on
June 26, 2023, Barcelona confirmed his signing. Barcelona reportedly offered
the midfielder a three-year contract, which influenced his decision to join the
Spanish champions. Manchester City offered him a new one-year deal with the
option of a second year, but his pay demands, along with the Catalan club's
offer of three years, indicate that City is content with him leaving and with
their present midfield options.
Manchester City will miss Gundogan, but they have a
solid midfield with players like Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Phil
Foden. Meanwhile, Barcelona has bolstered its midfield with the arrival of
Gundogan, who will bring experience and talent to the squad.
